Effort of a teacher educator; An experience of Use of low-cost science teaching materials for effective science education in Bangladesh

Scenario of science education in Bangladesh: Bangladesh is a developing country. We are in backward position in science and technology. We are habituated at theory based science classes at primary, secondary & higher secondary level. Most of our science teacher possesses a mentality that hands-on experiments only for practical examination. In our science class about no science experiments perform for delivery science content. No difference at delivary technique of science content & history content at our class room. So science interest decreasing day by day & it became harder. As a result science enrollment at secondary & higher secondary level decreasing rapidly. Statistics shows that science students at secondary level in Bangladesh decreases 48% at last 22 years. It is a dangerous sign at our science education. Starting with low-cost science teaching materials: I am working at Teachers’ Training college, Rangpur since 1997 as a Laboratory Assistant. I had an opportunity to work as a counterpart of JOCV member Mr. Kengy Kawata from March 2000 to March 2002. I learn many things about hands on science experiments with low-cost materials from our surroundings. I would like to give thanks to JICA authority. After departure of JOCV member I am continuing practice with hands on science experiments.
